Re: Dear Chickens

Done!!! Had to board up one section of the run in the end and then herd each girl into it - they may have gone to bed but they were WIDE awake. I have to say the ex batts I have had have been far easier to handle than these ex-free range ladies (using the term ladies very loosely as I believe if I c...

Dear Chickens

Well Madge and Ninja, tonight you are really going to hate me. You have scaley legs - and as you know I tried the calm, gentle method of dealing with it. The first night Ninja did not put up a struggle and I was able to hold her with her legs in a bowl of vegetable oil so that the oil would drown th...

Re: ROYAL CANIN AND BEAR BAITING

Royal Canin issued a statement that they had sponsored a DOG SHOW. They were unaware that bear baiting was part of the events. They have "discussed" the situation with their Ukraine reps and taken steps to ensure that nothing like this happens again.

Re: run finished painting and the chicken house

I had read about glossing the interior so this year the girls have magnolia walls and ceiling .......... and no sign of red mite in there so far with the gaps in the wood blocked.

Re: Update on moving into new coup...Grrr

It never even occurred to me there would be a problem last year when I changed coops, just took the old one out, built the new one (carefully supervised by the girls who thought knocking over the tub with nuts and bolts and then scratching earth over it was great fun), shut them in the run at night ...

Re: Flies

Thank you for suggesting Red Top!!!! The run has not had a fly problem - probably because the girls like to poo all round the garden during the day - but whenever I have the French doors open at least 3 blue bottles come in ...... I'm pretty sure there is a rats nest under the decking just outside i...

Lunchtime Treats

Poor dogs cannot even have their lunchtime treats outside without the girls charging up the garden looking for scraps! (you can see why Ninja got her name - her bum is just visible between China's head and Madge) http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd32/Budalice/Dogs/1016863_643598872317252_158694827...

RIP Chicky

I joined the forum in January when I needed to find a companion or two for Chicky following the death just before Christmas of the last of her "sisters" and I was worried about her being alone overnight in the big hen house in the freezing weather. Ninja and Madge came to join her and Chic...

Re: Two surprises today

The pup will now remember who is boss! I do understand Wendy's concerns however my dogs and chickens free range together happily (with the first lot of hens who were confined to the run Bo the Staffie X became very protective and if any other dogs came to the garden he would stand by the gate to mak...

Bullying!

no - not other chickens but my poor staffie X was forced to drop his Stagbar Antler chew today so Madge could peck at it. Before now he has had a biscuit taken off him by Chicky. If anyone knows where I can get a copy of "Self Defence for Dogs who are meant to be Evil" would they please le...

Re: does anyone make a living, keeping chickens?

I have finally had to buy a new sack of food so can add that our Farmers Co-operative sells a 20kg bag of their own brand Layers Pellets for £7.15. Is there VAT on the food? There was £1.18 on the whole bill which was the Pellets, a sack of dog food (pretty sure that is VAT free) and some gate fixin...

Re: a cat has 9 lives, how about a chicken??

the boys are going to miss flyball this afternoon as I would have trouble holding them (especially Jed at over 40kg) - my right arm is aching a bit and my left wrist is really hurting so must have jarred it a fair bit when I went over on the cobbles. The worst thing is that my right wellie is now le...

a cat has 9 lives, how about a chicken??

well that is my good deed for the day!! Had a beach walk with a friend and our dogs, then as the cafe there was closed we went to St Dogmaels for a coffee on the way home. As we pulled up there were a couple of ladies looking at the mill stream where there are ducks and chickens and saying "oh ...

Glad things are getting better for her. I'm pretty sure Aldi do a Manuka Honey and the number on it (can't remember what it is called but the higher the number the better) is at a decent level. I know I noticed it not long after I had been on Manuka Honey after an op and the cost was much less than ...

Re: Part Chicken part Ostrich??

there are a couple of eggs a fraction taller but not quite so big round!!! Yes the whole garden is gravel - the dogs were turning it into a muddy race track and as I have a dog flap it means no paw wiping when they come in, so the gravel cut down a lot of dirt indoors. No gravel in the chicken run s...
