Re: Runner Beans

Checked mine out again today. Plenty of flower but no beans yet.

The peas are doing ok though, plenty of pods but not quite ready for picking yet. Sweet peas are just start to come into bloom.

Went for a walk and came back with raspberries.

Mrs Fab and I went for a walk just where we live this afternoon. I always carry a plastic bag with me in case I find something interesting. This afternoon, it was raspberries. With raspberries costing unto £2 a punnet in the supermarkets, we must have collected £6 worth. Unfortunately, the season fo...

Re: Does anyone grow their own maggots?

I certainly wouldn't go for breeding maggots, they want smelly rot meat (or similar rotting organic material). I had considered breeding mealworms, they seem a lot easier to manage. Try googling mealworm breeding and you get sites like this - http://www.reptileexpert.org/mealworms.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: Elderflower wine recipe

Just to add about yeast. If you don't have yeast, you don't get beer or wine, whatever you are brewing! Even with Ginger beer you keep a Ginger plant, which is really just a jar to which yeast has been added that you top up each day with more Ginger and sugar to feed the yeast. Now should you add ye...

Re: Elderflower wine recipe

I've got some elder flower champagne on too at the minute. It's certainly not elder flower wine, though can make elder berry wine. I also make home brew beer and elder flower champagne is more akin to beer, though it is not likely to have a high alcohol content. But like beer it is bottle conditione...

Any success in growing chilis?

I have got three chili plants on a sunny window sill? They are growing well enough, with plenty of green leaves but are they likely to flower and give me a few chilis? I have got a Scotch Bonnet, a Bhut Jolokia and something else I can't remember the type of. Having said that, although I love spicy ...

Re: Beetroots doing well ...

Hi Orfy - yes that was exactly the one I tried and it looked exactly like his when it was finished. The only variation was that I added a little dried (fresh would have been better) coconut.

It might be a bit dry for some tastes but we served with rice and eat with Nansen and mango chutney.

Re: Beetroots doing well ...

Well I can report that beetroot curry is good. I used a south Indian recipe that results in a quite dry curry. If you google beetroot curry, then you find lots of variations. The one I used consisted of mustards seeds, cummin seeds, onions, mung dall, curry leaves, green chillies, turmeric, coriande...

One of the new girls has started laying

We got a couple of new point of lay pullets a few weeks ago, to add to our two remaining ex-batties. They all settled down well together after a week or so, and are now all getting along just fine (well most of the time, though Mono does like to let everyone know she's boss from time to time). The t...
