Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousRe: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousDear old Poppy has left us. She became very poorly last week & lost use of her legs. I think she had a tumour. She was pts on Friday. She was 9 1/2 years old, ex battery trans-hen with the most beautiful plumage. She didnt quite get to grow a full cockerel tail but her spurs were bigger than Bills. Bill misses her alot, she was always by his side.
Giblet is still going but is frail & thin & slowly fading - but still going for now, just. "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."

Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousThat is a great age Kitla, you must have looked after Poppy so well, and will miss her enormously.
Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousThankyou Spreckly, I do miss Poppy, she was the one always underfoot when I did gardening & sneaking indoors when the back door was open.
More sad news. I brought Giblet indoors last night as she didnt look well. She is dying, this time for real. she's in my arms where she loves to be- fading, my heart is breaking "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals."

Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousOh I am so sorry Kitty. The thought of losing Giby so soon after Poppy must be awful for you. You have done a marvellous job of looking after them as they have reached such tremendous ages. Giby is in the best place with you cuddling her, knowing she is so loved and safe in your arms. Take care Kitty, thinking about you in these heartbreaking times.
Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousSome memories of a very special hen.
I have lots of photos of Gib from hatching onwards, but stuck in Photobox. I downloaded all pics from there (took hours!) but find they're now in a format I cant use on a share site "He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. --Immanuel Kant Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousYesterday I picked up 3 ex farm hens from FSFH. I wasnt going to get any more but Bill looked so sad. Nugget, Chips & Sweetpea (though names may be tweeked once personalities show through) This morning I collected 2 eggs! the first eggs we've had from our chooks in years. They're living in Giblet's run for a while, Bill is beside himself with excitement. Bonny isnt taking much notice, I hope she's show her bossy side once they come out & becomes Queen Bonny again.

Sunny Clucker enjoyed Folk music and song in mid-Cheshire Re: Blind Giblet & friends at Chickenopolous3 newly free chookies are doing very well. We've had no fighting, just a bit of wing pulling by Bonny - which I expected & am quite pleased about (Queen Bonny reigns!) Sweetpea is very shy, stays mostly in or near the runs & wont let me near her. Nugget (the bald one) on the other hand is sooo friendly & tame, she is always at my feet & likes being carried around. Chips (the curly one) follows Nugget around & loves digging for worms with her, but no so keen on being picked up. Bill seems content & hangs around them, but isnt bothering them in a cockerel way. Praps he's getting a bit old, or he's saving himself for Spring. I've been letting them sleep where they like (Giblet's old coop) but tomorrow I shall push them all together in readiness for the cold weather thats coming

He's always done this, but Bonny & Poppy learned to stay in bed until he calmed down. Poor Sweetpea nearly flew over the hedge into the neighbours garden to escape him. So I've decided to keep Bill confined every morning until his "madness" has passed. Once she'd emerged from her hiding place Little Nugget came down to the house to see me, she's such a sweety!

--Immanuel Kant Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousChickenopolous is facing the biggest Hooley (storm Eunice) since we built it. The roof is holding so far, but there's so much banging & crashing of the panels & tarps I have allowed Bill & the girls out into the garden - against the rules - so they can find sheltered spots in the shrubs. Bill has been poorly with a lost voice & raspy breathing & has been on antibiotics but is on the mend. He is 8 years old now but still looking dapper. Bonny is 10 this spring, she is a real old lady. She spends alot of time sitting still in sunny spots, she cant see well & when I give out treats the youngens nearly knock her over trying to steal her food. She still manages to tug on their wings occasionally & remind them she's still the queen!

--Immanuel Kant Re: Blind Giblet & friends at ChickenopolousIt may be against the rules but I don't think they ought to apply to garden pets. It's the factory farms, shipping chicks from one country to another and keeping poultry crowded and stressed that spread these diseases. Not the sparrows in your garden.
Understand that it would be hard to decide where to draw a line and enforce it though. Dance caller. http://mo-dance-caller.blogspot.co.uk/p/what-i-do.html

He never fully recovered from his illness, his crow was still a croak & running around made him breathless & his comb purple, but he seemed happy & did all the other chickeny things. This morning I found him collapsed on the floor of their coop. He's jaundiced & his breathing is bubbly, he's been fading today & hopfully will fly over the bridge peacefully tonight.
