Re: Homemade's late start.Stuff in the greenhouse is growing but not ripening, runner beans are "minging" and the ornamental garnen is overrun with bindweed. Things on the allotment are looking better, if not ideal and we are getting some produce at least.

Sunny Clucker, she came, she saw, she moved on! Re: Homemade's late start.Well the plants are starting to produce now. We have had 2 courgettes, a leek, loads of mange tout and broad beans, very few peas or tomatoes and a few carrots. The potatoes have been doing quite well although they all have slug damage to cut out.
The sunshine should help the crops that are coming on fingers crossed. Hubby has put on more chicken pellets as the rain has probably leached the nutrients away. Tomorrow we are going to cut all the tops off the early and maincrop potatoes as they have been massively attacked by blight this week. Hopefully the spuds will be unaffected as yet. In the garden the runner beans are finally starting to put on some strong growth . The tomatoes in the greenhouse are starting to show signs of blight. Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France

Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France
Sunny Clucker, she came, she saw, she moved on! Re: Homemade's late start.Well, from a late start on an abysmal year we are doing ok. Good job there are only two of us to feed but we have had broad beans, spuds and mangetout for weeks, enough bits of thinnings for salads, and the courgettes have just started to crop with a vengance.
We haven't had to buy any veg for a couple of weeks which is the main aim and now that the cucumbers and tomatoes are in production no salad either Hubby has removed the tops from the spuds because of blight and we are just using them as needed, won't be any to store. The Broad beans and the early mangetout have stopped cropping so th tops are on the compost. From looking green and lush last week the allotment now looks 1/2 empty! The pumpkin has grown HUGE! Because we have to use every last bit of production to save money we are learning lots of new ways to cook things. Hubby doesn't like courgette, but we have enjoyed, courgette fritters, stuffed courgette, courgette lasagne, courgette bread. It is a good experience. Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France

The sweetcorn doing well. The impressive pumpkin (one of Sara's french potiron seed) Quand je serai vieille je vais vivre en France

Allotment has been cropping well. we have been feeding ourselves from it quite successfully. The biggest triumph is the sweetcorn which is delicious. The onions have been lifted and dried in the greenhouse. Half the crop. The pink fir has been lifted and sorted. Not too much blight or slug damage considering. Good selection of courgettes. The rest of the potatoes need lifting and the pumpkins need harvesting. It was an unpleasant job digging the potatoes because of the HUGE slugs. I'm afraid I resorted to stabbing them with the fork. They are quite quite, disgusting and I don't know of much wildlife that will eat them when they are that big. Hopefully it will reduce the number of eggs laid for next year. Re: Homemade's late start.thats a good crop of veggies, super piccies, makes me wish I had my allotment again.
Re: Homemade's late start.Well year end.
All things considered did reasonably well given the conditions. We still have stored, Onions, Beetroot, Carrots, Pumpkins, Squash, and pink fir Potatoes. We still have frozen, Broad beans, Corn on the cob. We are still picking, Parsnips, Leeks, Kale and Cavallaro Nero We await, Purple sprouting. Have pretty much avoided buying veg and even salad untill recently and we have a load of pickles and jams. Did get desperate for a large jacket potato at one point when we were down to our last manky slug riddled potatoes but we held out and didn't buy potatoes untill they were all gone. Xmas dinner for 6, included our own, Parsnips, onions, sweetcorn, new and pink fir potatoes, carrots and a few (very small) brussel sprouts Preparations for next year were going well untill waterlogging set in. The digging will have to wait a little longer. Hubby has done the planning and dug and filled a trench with compost and fresh garden waste ready for next year's runner beans. My sweetcorn did nothing, the runnerbeans were weary, toms in the tunnell were ok and courgettes. I still have leeks in the ground, some look good and upright but some are a bit bent over. How can I tell if they are ok? for next year. Sarah - slave to Cats Anthony, Elsa and Pippa, Chickens, Heidi, Fleur, Gabby and Marmite, R.I.P Cadbury
Re: Homemade's late start.Well done homemade .
I love the fact the sun is shining in all your photos, it's been such a mixed year weatherwise you've had an amazing harvest The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don't have
